Application entries for the 2020 scholarship are open. Students may only apply for the scholarship after an offer for a place has been made. Students with offers (conditional or unconditional)of a place on a postgraduate taught course can apply for the scholarship using an application form. The Application form can be downloaded from the Loughborough University website.
Information for 2020/2021
The Loughborough Development Trust Africa Scholarship will cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year .
A limited number of scholarships will be awarded, and the standards required are very high.
Students are expected to fund their travel and maintenance costs through other sources. Students must include evidence of maintenance funds in the scholarship application.
The university will shortlist applications and the final decision on the awards will be made by a selection panel of senior staff of the University. The selection panel will use the following eligibility criteria when assessing applications:
- Currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa
- Evidence of exceptional academic achievement (normally a 1st Class Honours Degree)
- Commitment to return to their home country on completion of postgraduate programme
- Evidence of the ability and commitment to making a significant contribution to their home country on their return
- Full understanding of the costs involved in coming to study and live in the UK
- Evidence of strong motivation and initiative to secure funds to cover the remainder of the costs involved
Applicants are advised to spend considerable effort ensuring that this application reaches the selectors in a form that is clear, well presented and which reflects your abilities and motivation.
Chevening Scholarship – UK
Chevening is the UK Government’s global scholarship program that offers future leaders the unique opportunity to study in the UK. These scholarships are awarded to outstanding professionals from all over the world to pursue a one-year master’s degree in any subject at any UK university.
Chevening provides fully-funded scholarships, leaving you free to focus on achieving your academic goals and enjoying the experience of a lifetime. You will live and study in the UK for a year. During that time, you will develop professionally and academically, grow your network, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.

If you applied before the deadline, but have not yet submitted your English language test results or your unconditional university offer, you must upload them to your application by 16 July 2020. Use the ‘update my application’ button above to upload them.
If you are eventually conditionally selected for a Chevening Scholarship, you must submit these documents to remain in the process.

President’s PhD Scholarships – Imperial College
If you are a high performing undergraduate or Master’s student and have a strong desire to undertake a PhD programme at a world-class research institution, you could be selected to receive full tuition fees and a generous stipend for a PhD place at Imperial College London. The President’s PhD Scholarships aims to provide up to 50 research students with great potential the opportunity to work within their chosen research field with the support of an excellent supervisor.
Opportunities for PhD funding via this scheme are extremely competitive, with higher than usual eligibility requirements. Applicants should be confident that they can demonstrate outstanding academic performance before applying for this international scholarship scheme. Previous successful recipients of the scholarship have ranked highly in their class, often achieving 85% or higher grades in their degree(s).
The earliest start date for funded places is 1 August 2020, and the latest start date is 1 November 2020.
Successful candidates will receive the following financial support for up to 3.5 years:
- Full funding for tuition fees
- A stipend of £21,400 per annum to assist with living costs
- A consumables fund of £2,000 per annum for the first three years of study
